Who Are We? 

A J Carter & Co was founded in 1981 by Andrew Carter who set up the practice in Witney as he was keen to be involved in the local community. Over the years the business expanded and Nicholas Williams joined the practice in 1984. Mark Gyde joined in 1991 becoming a partner in April 1994.

Over the last twenty six years the practice has grown steadily and the client base, although principally centred around West Oxfordshire, is spread across the whole of the country. We act for clients from all walks of life including personal tax work, small and large family businesses (both partnerships and corporate), charities and UK subsidiaries of overseas companies. We are keen to provide a friendly and personal service to our clients.

The partners are committed Christians.

Andrew Carter continues his involvement within the town and local community; he served as town Mayor for a two year period and is currently involved with the Rotary Club of Witney. Andrew has largely been responsible for establishing the practice as one of the leading firms within the town and is responsible for Trust accounting and related tax matters.

Nicholas Williams is our specialist tax partner who not only has a thorough grasp of the UK tax system but a good understanding of overseas related matters. Nick is a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and is involved with tax planning and compliance work both at local tax office level and the more specialist Inland Revenue offices. Recently he has gained considerable experience on the problems surrounding clients affected by "IR35".

Mark Gyde is the partner with specific responsibility for charity clients and for ensuring compliance with all current and relevant legislation. Mark also has responsibility for audit compliance under the Companies Acts, the development and training of staff and for the computer systems and information technology within the firm.

Our Managers

In addition we employ three managers, all of whom are Chartered Accountants. Andy Brooks qualified in 1985 and manages a portfolio of small and medium sized clients. Andy is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Mark Hazell joined the practice in 1993 and assists the partners with the accounts preparation and audits of the larger clients. Pamela Davis joined us in March 2001 and she, too, has considerable experience with general practice clients.
